Love this!

Maps are an invitation to wonder:

"I wonder what's really out there..."

"Wow. What wonder."

And to, "wander" and make new discoveries, especially in a novel.

And the typewriter thing...I love the idea of buying an old Remington and playing with it. But...technology. And dictation. I never see myself going back to typing my first drafts on anything.

Yeah, I think I'd fall back on a typewriter perhaps in some form of apocalypse, but otherwise it's just a novelty! :)

Kevin, a couple of points.

First off, I have always like maps. New maps, old maps: all maps. Above all, I enjoy old atlases. I don't even need to have dragon, monsters or whatever on them to start imagining and next to fantasizing about going to ..... wherever.

Next, you write in part, "... typewriters, and their digital equivalents ..." I learned to type [for some years in the past few decades - I seem to recall - people talked about learning to keyboard] on an old manual typewriter in Grade ten typing class. Yup, as an elective [note: elective, not electric or electronic] subject I took typing, a skill that has stood me in good stead in the intervening sixty odd years (tells you how old I might be - if I grew up, that is).

Anyway, "typewriters" I absolutely understand. "Digital equivalents" I am a bit uncertain. Do you refer to good old word processors? In other words, of course, computers that can only, ugggghh ... process words. Just curious.

So there are a lot of devices out there that more or less bill themselves. as "digital typewriters." They tend to be promoted as "distraction free writing tools." One company in particular is Astrohaus, which makes the "Freewrite Smart Typewriter." (https://astrohaus.com/typewriter/). They also make half a dozen more products in the same vein.

I like the idea of these, but the price tag is a bit much for something I consider a novelty. I write with a laptop, and have no trouble with distractions. So I'd buy one of these just to play with, essentially.

Great piece. I love the old charts and maps. The old Rand McNally journeys across the country. A world hidden behind the matrix.
